A fabulous place, somewhere between myth and reality.

In the late 1950s and early ’60s, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV came to visit Sardinia, inspired by the enthusiasm of the World Bank official, Duncan Miller.

The Prince was fascinated by the wild, rugged beauty of the area, and seduced by the colours of the sea and the scent of the Mediterranean scrub. He loved the granite rocks shaped by the wind, the strange, fantastic landscapes, and the feeling of being isolated from the world in a completely unexploited setting. All this persuaded the prince to stay here, and he made the decision to create something really special and unique.

So began a major project involving some of the world’s most prestigious architects: Jacques Couelle, Luigi Vietti and Michele Busiri Vici. The Costa Smeralda was created.

The Prince and his team developed a new architectural style inspired by the classic, practical design of Gallura houses, and complementing the beauty of a natural setting now recognised throughout the world.

Before taking the name of Costa Smeralda, the territory was known as the Monti di Mola: an area stretching from Portisco to Liscia di Vacca, with 55 km of coastline and 80 beaches, all set in a magnificent landscape. While Mount Moro was once the domain of the shepherds of Gallura, it now overlooks one of the world’s most prestigious resorts: the glamorous Porto Cervo.

Porto Cervo is generally recognised as the true heart of the Costa Smeralda; an important centre facing onto a deep natural harbour. Its streets and squares provide a relaxing, evocative setting for those who come on holiday or just for a walk, while shops selling globally famous brands offer all you could want in terms of luxury and style.

The resort has two tourist harbours, designed and built in the 1960s and ’70s. They are considered among the most convenient and well-equipped marinas in the Mediterranean area, and can comfortably accommodate large yachts. Porto Cervo is famous for its annual regattas, which help make these marinas some of the busiest in the world.
